It is not easy to manage a legend. Josef Zauner not only knows how to do it, he also knows that it must constantly be filled with new life in order to really sparkle. And so it is safe to assume that when the decision was made to name Bad Ischl the European Capital of Culture in 2020, world-famous examples of Austrian culture such as the Zaunerstollen, the Zaunerkipferl or the incomparable wafer cake, which can be enjoyed in the "Kurkonditorei Zauner" in Bad Ischl, were also considered. Bad Ischl is a splendor, but the old spa town only becomes truly seductive thanks to the spa confectionery – and has been since 1832. At two locations and with a new bakery built under Josef Zauner's aegis, the Austrian pastry tradition is cultivated here in its purest form. It has been over 50 years since the mountain farmer's boy from Lungau began his apprenticeship at Zauner. And training remains one of the cornerstones of this leading company: there are countless confectioners and sugar bakers who once learned their craft at this source of deliciousness and then took it out into the whole country and the wider world.
