It’s not easy to manage a legend. Josef Zauner not only understands this, he also knows that it must be constantly filled with new life in order to sparkle properly. And so it is quite possible to assume that the decision to nominate Bad Ischl 2020 as European Capital of Culture also commemorated world-famous testimonies of Austrian culture such as the Zaunerstollen, the Zaunerkipferl or the incomparable Zauner-wafer-cake that were the “Kurkonditorei Zauner” to Bad Ischl.
Bad Ischl is a splendor, but the old spa town is only really seductive thanks to the Kurkonditorei – and has been doing so since 1832. At two locations and with a new bakery built under Josef Zauner’s aegis, Austrian tradition in pure culture is maintained here.
It is more than 50 years since the mountain farmer boy from Lungau started as an apprentice at Zauner. And training remains one of the cornerstones of this flagship business: the confectioners and sugar bakers who once learned their craft at this source of delicacy are innumerable: they take it all over the country and the wider world.
